From 1 January 2020, the limit for Sulphur in fuel oil used onboard ships operating outside the designated Emission Control Areas will be further reduced.
By instating this stricter limit, the IMO wants to further reduce the amount of sulphur oxide emanating from ships. This regulation is expected to bring major health and environmental benefits for the world, particularly for populations living close to ports and coasts.
To comply with the new Sulphur limit, CLdN RO-RO will fuel their ferries with bunker fuel with a sulphur content of no more than 0.50% m/m, as opposed to the current limit of 3.50% m/m. This will result in significant increases in fuel costs, which will lead to the revision of our current BAF surcharge system.
The Sulphur Emission Controlled Area as it will be instated from 2020 covers the entire CLdN shipping network: the Ports in Ireland, Spain and Portugal, currently not situated in an Emission Control Area, will now be affected as well.
Details of the new BAF regulation will be issued as more information becomes available to us.

Today's Designated Emission Control Area does not include locations in Spain, Portugal and Ireland. From 1 January 2020 onwards, the ports of Dublin, Santander and Porto will also be subject to BAF.
